Many runners are plagued by pain and injury due to overuse injury and not having the necessary and prerequisite strength and mobility for it. Hear me out: Let’s take the average desk worker that wants to begin running recreationally for the exercise and cardiovascular benefits, most likely this person has a host of muscle imbalances such as tight and weak muscles combined with poor movement patterns resulting in improper running technique/form. This person eventually develops knee pain and was told to or decides that rest is the solution for the knee pain and proceeds to rest for a few weeks, while maybe taking some Aleve and using the RICE method. The knee pain subsides and the person decides that it’s time to run again! Do you think that the rest cured the knee pain where this person can go about their running again pain free? Absolutely not! That knee pain will likely resurface with time and even worsen with additional running due to not addressing the underlying source of the knee issues. A great analogy I’ve heard: if your car is out of alignment, putting it in the garage for a few weeks will keep it from getting worse, but it’s not addressing the actual problem. The moment you take that car out of the garage for a drive the underlying issues are still there. Many recreational runners have weak core/pelvis control, and tight hips/weak hips, which is why many are plagued with knee pain, (runners knee, IT band syndrome ), hamstring pulls/strains, shin splints, and back pain. Hopefully I did a decent job of illustrating and stressing the importance of incorporating resistance training, stretching, and mobility work to support and increase the longevity and performance of your running so you can be running and exercising pain free into old age!🏃🏻‍♂️🏃🏼‍♀️ If you are a runner that is experiencing any aches or pains, feel free to comment or dm me to help you out. Today started off stressful! I made my first grocery store run since being home from Florida. What a weird, uneasy feeling it was😕 And I never wanted to scratch my face so bad before as I did while I was in the stores🤣 But the day got so much better😊 I had a delivery to my front door of beautiful new earrings made by a talented woman here in Clarenville😍 I am in love with them!! Made a ~squash lasagna~ ✌🏼layers consisted of Italian squash, marinara, diced onion, spinach, basil, Parmesan cheese, nutritional yeast, ground turkey, salt, pepper, herb de Provence, and Alfredo sauce. Quarantine day 21: Joined in on my first “Zoom” conference today! (Didn’t know that even existed before corona ). It’s also new month which brings us one day closer to normalcy. First two weeks were pretty okay! Now we’re starting to really feel the affects of cabin fever but making things happen and staying busy! While walks in the park are a nice, literal breath of fresh air, healing from this injury hasn’t allowed for a lot of cardio or running, so I’m doing what I can. Going on almost 2.5 months of no high intense sweat seshes + quarantine snacks = 😅. Sure didn’t look the way I did in January but I’m coming to peace with the circumstances and knowing this isn’t forever. This has forced me to learn to be comfortable in my own skin regardless of the defined muscles that I got used to seeing and frankly worked so hard for. It hasn’t been easy and some days I feel so BLEH I’m in tears. During the week I still eat healthy with Sunday meal prep routines still in place. The weekend snack binges are what get me 🥴. I have my good days and not so good days, and that’s okay. What I remind everyone is that this too shall pass, continue to stay in prayer, and always count your blessings. I’ve been fortune enough to still have a job during all of this craziness. I probably would’ve died moving to a new city for a new job and then it all fall apart on me. So I would say adulting and being independent is continuing to be a success 😂 I’m very blessed to be able to still provide for myself and pay my own bills. Grad school hw has also continued to keep me busy so I have no excuse not to get things done. Thanks for letting me be transparent with you for a moment if you’ve read this far. Love y’all!
